How does laser hair removal work?
Selective Photothermolysis (SPT) is the primary method of laser hair removal. As the laser passes over the skin, a specific wavelength of light is absorbed by the hair root and transformed into heat. The heat causes thermal destruction of the hair follicle, which ultimately destroys the hair root. Through SPT, patients of all skin colors experience safe and long-term hair reduction.
Who is an appropriate candidate for laser hair removal?
Any skin color can be treated, although different skin types are best treated with different lasers. Lighter skin is best treated with the Alexandrite laser. Darker skin types can only be safely treated with an Nd:YAG laser and should only be treated under the supervision of a dermatologist who specializes in laser surgery. Fortunately, all necessary state-of-the-art laser technology for achieving the best, safest results is available at Premier Dermatology.
Successful laser hair removal requires pigmented hair. Unfortunately, blonde and gray hair cannot be successfully treated with laser technology.
Preparation for laser hair removal
For the best results and lowest risk of complication, the following pre-treatment preparation is recommended:
- Avoid the sun and wear SPF 50 or greater for at least four weeks prior to treatment.
- Do not wax or epilate the target area three weeks prior to treatment. Instead, problem hair growth can be shaved or chemical depilatory cream can be used.
- Do not apply lotion, moisturizer and/or oil to the target area the day of treatment.
- Shave the target area the morning of treatment.
After treatment care
Most patients see 80 to 90% permanent hair reduction in four to six treatments. Because hair grows in cycles, there may be some regrowth. If this occurs, a follow-up treatment should be scheduled. Laser hair removal patients generally experience no complications when correct pre-treatment preparation is followed.
