Learn more about Malignant Melanoma

The most serious skin cancer, melanoma, develops from the pigment producing cells in the skin known as melanocytes. They typically appear as changing moles with an irregular shape, border, or color. They may develop in both sun exposed and sun protected areas. Risk factors for melanoma include fair skin, excess sun exposure and sunburns, close family members with melanoma, having a large number of moles or having had an abnormal mole. Melanoma is very treatable when detected early. When more advanced, melanoma can spread and become fatal. Early lesions are treated with surgical removal. More advanced lesions are treated with lymph node removal and, in some cases, chemotherapy.
